A three-pin XLR connector is a keyed circular electrical interface with three insulated contacts and a retaining mechanism. Male versions present pins and female versions provide mating sockets. Cable-mounted and panel-mounted formats connect an assembled cable to equipment or another cable. The three contacts are widely used in professional audio, but the connector alone does not establish the circuit's signal type or pin assignment.
