(Self-) Resettable Fuse
A self-resettable fuse is a positive temperature coefficient overcurrent protection component placed in series with a circuit.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
Polymer PTC devices contain conductive particles dispersed in a polymer matrix. At normal temperature, connected particle paths conduct current. Joule heating from excess current causes the polymer structure to expand and disrupt many of those paths; resistance rises sharply and the reduced current limits further energy delivery. Ceramic PTC overcurrent devices use a ceramic material's steep temperature-dependent resistance transition instead. Their construction and electrical characteristics require their own selection data, even when both technologies are described as resettable protection.
The high-resistance condition does not constitute a mechanical open circuit. A residual current can continue to flow and help keep the device warm. Removing or sufficiently reducing the applied energy allows cooling and recovery; a continuing fault can make it trip again. Recovery time, post-trip resistance and the response to repeated cycling depend on the component and surrounding circuit. A resettable component therefore cannot automatically substitute for an isolating switch or guarantee that a damaged load is safe to energize again.
Lead-mounted and surface-mounted packages serve different assembly processes, but package style alone does not identify the trip characteristic. Hold current must be evaluated at the actual local temperature, including nearby heat sources, while fault voltage, available current, time-to-trip and normal-state resistance determine compatibility with the circuit. A USB supply, a telecom line and an appliance board can impose different normal transients and fault energies on superficially similar parts.
What turns activity into demand
Choose the component around the circuit's normal current, temperature and recovery behavior, rather than a single room-temperature current value. The subject is a resettable overcurrent component, including the reported lead-mounted and SMD formats. One-time fusible elements, PTC heating elements, temperature-sensing thermistors and complete electronic protection modules have different functions and commercial boundaries; sharing a PTC material does not make them interchangeable products.
