100G Optical Transceivers
A 100G optical transceiver converts between a host's electrical data interface and an optical link designed for 100G-class communication. The data-rate category spans more than one mechanical package and optical architecture. Package compatibility, optical interoperability and supported traffic mode must therefore be specified separately before modules are compared or counted.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
An optical module includes transmission and reception components together with electrical interfacing, signal conditioning and management appropriate to its implementation. QSFP28 is a common package, while CFP-derived formats and platform-specific packages serve other equipment. Two modules in different host packages can support an interoperable optical link, but they cannot be inserted into each other's cages. Conversely, matching packages need not have matching optical interfaces.
Direct-detection links can use parallel optical lanes, internal wavelength multiplexing or newer single-carrier arrangements. Coherent 100G transport optics add a different modulation and receiver-processing approach for their specified line application. They should not be grouped into one undifferentiated reach class. The rate label also does not make an Ethernet-only device support OTN or another transport protocol; multi-rate operation is a declared product capability.
The purchase boundary includes the optical module and its permitted operating conditions, but the installed result depends on equipment and fibre infrastructure. Path loss, receiver input limits, connectors, required error correction and thermal allowance must agree with the selected implementation. A link's payload traffic, encoded line rate and internal lane rates describe different quantities; comparing them without that distinction can create a misleading specification ranking.
What turns activity into demand
100G-class optical links compared across host packages, line architectures and the fibre system they must connect.
The commercial boundary
The family covers 100G optical transceiver modules across explicitly defined host and optical formats. Complete active optical cables, copper assemblies, optical engines supplied inside equipment and line-system products need separate unit boundaries. A QSFP28-only subset should not be counted again as additional independent demand when reconciling the broader market.
