2-Phase Stepper Motors

A two-phase stepper motor develops controlled rotary movement by changing the excitation of two electrical winding phases in sequence. In a common hybrid construction, toothed stator poles interact with a permanent-magnet rotor so successive current states shift the rotor's equilibrium angle. The driver determines the excitation sequence and current; the load determines whether the rotor can follow it.

Two-phase describes the electrical winding system, not a fixed number of external wires. Bipolar motors commonly bring out four leads and reverse current through each phase. Unipolar arrangements can provide center taps and additional leads. Hybrid designs, frame dimensions, rotor construction, shaft geometry and winding resistance or inductance affect the usable motor. The familiar full-step angle is a model specification rather than a consequence of phase count alone.

A current-regulated driver switches its supply to control phase current. At higher speed, winding inductance and the available supply influence how quickly current can build, so moving torque must be read from the motor-and-driver combination's speed curve. Holding torque describes an energized stationary condition. It does not establish running torque, acceleration capability or safe retention of a suspended load after power is removed.

Microstepping varies the relative phase currents to create intermediate commanded positions and smoother movement. Finer pulse subdivision is not a guarantee of equally finer loaded positioning accuracy. Load torque, inertia, resonance, friction and transmission compliance affect motion. An open-loop command count cannot prove that the rotor followed every step; an encoder or other feedback arrangement is an additional feature rather than an inherent property of every stepper motor.

The commercial boundary

The scope is the two-phase stepper motor and any explicitly included gear, brake or feedback option. Drivers, power supplies and motion controllers may be separate. Three-phase or five-phase steppers and continuously commutated servo systems use different drive requirements. An integrated motor-and-driver package should not be counted again as a separate bare motor without defining the unit.
