10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable Optical Module

A 10 Gigabit small form factor pluggable optical module is a compact removable transceiver that connects a supported host port to an optical fibre link. The common SFP+ implementation exposes one transmit and one receive high-speed electrical path to the host. Its optical specification determines the light source, receiver, wavelength arrangement and suitable fibre, independently of the metal package.

The module combines an electrical connector, transmitter optical subassembly, receiver optical subassembly and control circuitry within a latched housing. Multimode short-reach and single-mode variants use different optical components and link conditions. Duplex-LC and single-fibre bidirectional configurations also require different optical mating arrangements. A familiar SFP+ cage is therefore an integration boundary, not a complete optical-link specification.

Receive electronics turn photodetector current into a usable electrical signal; transmitter circuitry drives the light source from the host data. Signal conditioning and supported line rates must be checked for the particular module. Physical insertion does not make a port support every Ethernet, Fibre Channel or transport mode carried by a similar-looking part. A 1G SFP and a 10G SFP+ require the appropriate host mode even when their outlines are alike.

Link qualification must account for the installed fibre, connectors and permitted receive-power range. A nominal distance cannot replace a loss calculation or confirm receiver overload on a very short connection. Available digital monitoring can expose optical power, temperature and operating conditions, but reading those values is not a complete traffic test. Module power and case-temperature requirements must also fit the platform.

The commercial boundary

This family covers optical 10G pluggable modules. Copper RJ45 modules, fixed active optical cables and passive DAC assemblies are distinct media products even when they use an SFP-shaped electrical port. Host switches, independent patch cords and wavelength multiplexers are outside the module unless explicitly included.
