The producer’s question
Which part of the customer experience continues after the toy has been sold?Shipments do not describe active use. Separate the installed device, activated experience and continuing service.
New products and replacements create device cohorts.
Setup and connectivity enable the delivered functions.
Repeat interaction and renewals describe the active service base.
Conceptual relationship; no market values or adoption rates are implied.
The body and the behaviour have different boundaries.
Casio’s Moflin combines sensing and physical responses in a compact companion; Sony’s aibo combines visual and touch inputs with articulated motion. Both belong to physical companionship, but a single hardware category conceals different bills of material and integration work. [1] [2]
For a producer, the useful comparison begins with what the delivered configuration does. Voice pickup, movement and charging are physical functions. Dialogue, stored interaction state and updates are software functions. Their relationship determines the complete experience.
Start with the sold device, then follow activation.
Sony describes its aibo cloud plan as a continuing service supporting data exchange, stored memories and app interaction. A hardware transaction and an ongoing service therefore have distinct boundaries. [3]
The resulting commercial model needs separate cohorts: devices shipped, devices set up, devices in regular use and subscriptions still active. A device can remain in a household while its service use changes. Treating all installed devices as subscribers overstates the renewal base.
Use changes the workload after the sale.
Where interaction uses cloud processing, an additional session can create service workload without creating another hardware sale. Compare the included service period, renewal terms and function availability alongside the device price. This is a commercial implication of the connected architecture, rather than a reported supplier margin.
Product mix also matters. More low-complexity units can expand shipments while changing the average price and the support load. The question is which complete product and service configuration the buyer receives.
Compare the experience across its lifetime.
Evaluate setup, usable offline functions, charging, updates and service continuity alongside interaction quality. Track repeat use and renewals separately from shipments. A change in either measure changes the business interpretation.
