A 1653 nm DFB laser diode chip is a bare semiconductor emitter designed for narrow-band radiation near a methane absorption feature in the 1.65-micrometer region. Its distributed-feedback grating selects the lasing wavelength, while controlled changes in junction current and temperature tune the emission through the spectral region used by the gas instrument.
