An absolute rotary encoder reports a coded shaft angle rather than requiring the controller to reconstruct position solely by counting incremental pulses. A singleturn device identifies position within one revolution; a multiturn device also supplies a revolution count over its specified range. The sensing method and turn-retention mechanism determine how that information remains available across operating states.
