Rigid Mine Dumper
Rigid mine dumper—also called a rigid haul truck—is a two-axle, off-highway dump vehicle with a non-articulated, high-strength steel frame designed for bench and ramp haulage of blasted rock and overburden in surface mines and large quarries. It is defined by a front axle with steering and a driven rear axle, nitrogen–oil strut suspension, large OTR radial tires, and a rear-hinged dump body on a fixed chassis; the class excludes articulated dump trucks and on-road “wide-body” conversions.

The powertrain is either diesel-mechanical (turbocharged diesel, hydrodynamic torque converter, powershift transmission, rear differential with planetary final drives) or diesel–electric (high-speed diesel driving a main generator, AC traction inverter(s), and wheel motors with planetary reductions), with trolley-assist variants drawing DC power from overhead lines for climbing segments. Service braking uses oil-cooled multi-disc brakes at all wheels with spring-applied hydraulic-release parking; retarding is hydrodynamic in mechanical trucks and electric (dynamic/resistive and, where infrastructure exists, regenerative to trolley) in diesel–electric trucks. Steering is hydrostatic with double-acting cylinders; the chassis is a welded, box-section frame with cast/forged nodes at high-load interfaces. Dump bodies are fabricated from quenched and tempered abrasion-resistant plate with optional liners, canopy, rock ejectors, and exhaust or coolant-based body heating for freeze mitigation; body geometry and center-of-gravity control tipping stability. Cooling packs handle engine and, as applicable, traction electronics heat at low vehicle speeds and high drawbar demand; monitoring includes payload sensing from suspension pressure or frame strain, thermal and pressure telemetry, and fleet data logging over radio or cellular links. Typical payload classes span roughly 35–400 t, with installed power from a few hundred to well over 2,000 kW, tire sizes commonly in the 49–63 in rim range, and turning geometry set by a rigid wheelbase and wide rear track.
Manufacture combines large welded fabrications with drivetrain and systems integration. Frames and bodies are robot or submerged-arc welded, stress-relieved or controlled-cooled, shot-blasted, machined at hinge and suspension bores, and coated; axle modules incorporate planetary hubs and wet brakes; engines, generators or transmissions, and cooling modules mount on isolated skids with aligned drivelines. Hydraulic plumbing uses bent/flare-fitted hard lines and crimped hoses under cleanliness controls; high-voltage looms on diesel–electric trucks are shielded and hipot-tested. Cab structures integrate ROPS/FOPS, bonded glazing, HVAC, and standardized controls; final assembly aligns body pivots and hoist cylinders, sets steering stops and brake pressures, calibrates payload systems and retarders, and verifies leak integrity and electrical insulation. End-of-line and track tests check brake force and fade, retarding performance on grade, dump cycle time and height, steering effort and turning radius, thermal balance at sustained load, vibration and noise, and stability on tilt fixtures.
Applications center on ore and waste haulage from shovel or excavator loading points to crushers, waste dumps, or stockpiles across mine benches and ramps, including long ramp hauls in deep pits, overburden moves in coal and soft-rock operations, and high-tonnage quarry cycles. Fleet sizing and pass match pair truck body volume and density with front-end loaders or electric rope shovels/hydraulic mining excavators, while haul-road geometry, gradient, rolling resistance, and climate set gearing, cooling margin, and body options. The defining attributes are a rigid chassis with high payload-to-weight ratio, full-time rear-axle drive with protected brakes for speed control on grades, large dump bodies engineered for abrasive rock, and powertrain choices that support high duty cycles in thermally and mechanically severe environments.
