Active Optical Cable
An active optical cable carries data through optical fibre between permanently attached electronic connector ends.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
An active optical cable (AOC) is a cabling technology that uses optical fiber between the connectors to improve the cable’s performance. There is a rise in demand for AOC as it serves as an alternative to copper cables, due to its various advantages such as small bend radius for easy installment, low power consumption, and light weight. Applications of these cables have expanded, from high-performance computers to networking and storage with the support of many protocols. In addition, AOCs rely on different protocols, such as InfiniBand, USB, and Ethernet, for data transmission.
The integrated ends contain the transmitter, receiver and associated electronics needed for the specified link. A QSFP-ended Ethernet assembly is one configuration; other protocols, connector formats and breakout arrangements require their own host support. The word active does not describe an active copper cable: an AOC's transmission medium between its ends is fibre. Its optical interface is generally internal to the fixed assembly.
Integration shifts the installation decision toward endpoint compatibility, supplied length, routing and service access. A cable that reaches between racks can still be unsuitable if the pull tabs are inaccessible, a connector cannot pass through the intended route or bends exceed the assembly's limits. The larger plug cannot be treated as if it were a bare fibre that can be field terminated. Cable jacket and permitted installation environment remain separate specifications.
Power is supplied at the host ends. Required electrical lanes, operating mode and available diagnostic information depend on the assembly and platform. A manufacturer's AOC with no digital diagnostics is not evidence that all AOCs lack them. Breakout cables need the host port to support the intended breakout configuration; a visually matching connector does not establish the lane mapping or software support.
What turns activity into demand
A fixed optical assembly simplifies a connection, but its replacement unit includes both ends and the cable between them. That changes installation and spare-stock decisions. The unit is a complete active optical cable assembly, including its fixed conversion ends. Separate transceivers, detachable fibre patch cords, passive copper DACs and active copper cables have different replacement and integration boundaries. Cable length and endpoint count must be defined before comparing shipments or prices.
