Recloser Control
A recloser control is the subsystem that determines and commands the protection and automatic operating sequence of a distribution recloser.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
There are two basic types of recloser control schemes: an integral hydraulic control or an electronic control located in a separate cabinet. Hydraulic recloser control is used in most single-phase reclosers and in three-phase recloser types 6H and V6H and is built as an integral part of the recloser. Electronic recloser controls are used in most three-phase reclosers and in the single-phase recloser types VXE, NOVA STS, and NOVA¹. Compared with the hydraulic control, electronic controls are more flexible, more easily customized and programmed, and many have advanced protection, metering, and automation functionality.
A hydraulic control can combine an overcurrent-responsive trip element with fluid passages, timing and counting mechanisms, using the recloser's operating-energy arrangement. An electronic package typically includes measurement-input circuitry, processor and firmware, trip/close outputs, local operating controls and an auxiliary power system in a suitable enclosure. A battery or other supported supply can sustain assigned control functions when line power is unavailable. The functions available during an outage depend on the offered package and the switching mechanism's energy requirements.
Measurement interfaces can receive current transformers and supported voltage sensors or low-energy inputs. The controller applies the selected protection elements, time-current characteristics and sequence state, then operates the compatible trip or close interface. Recloser control cables, signal levels, position feedback and phase operation are equipment-specific. Similar connectors or a familiar relay model do not establish interchangeability with every recloser, especially when replacing a legacy hydraulic arrangement with an electronic package.
Electronic controls can add event and oscillography records, source/load supervision, configurable fuse coordination, remote status and supported communications. These functions help investigate faults and adapt the feeder's operating strategy, but require suitable sensors, settings and integration. Closing may be inhibited for defined underground-fault, source or distributed-generation conditions. Protocols, cybersecurity provisions, optional algorithms and firmware lifecycle are part of the particular controller offering, rather than universal abilities of all recloser controls.
What turns activity into demand
Establish compatibility with the existing primary equipment before comparing added protection, data and communication functions. The commercial subject is the recloser control subsystem or mechanism supplied independently or as a defined part of a package. The full recloser includes primary interrupting equipment and its drive. A generic protection relay, SCADA gateway or hydraulic accessory is not automatically a complete recloser control. Bundled controller value should not be counted again as an additional complete recloser.

The two main types of Recloser Control are Hydraulic Control and Electronic Control, which accounted for about 56% and 44% of market share in 2019, respectively.
Europe had the largest market share in 2019 which accounted for over 28%, while United States and China held a market share of about 20% and 19%, by which these two regions take important roles that cannot be ignored.
