XLR Connector
XLR connectors are a family of keyed circular electrical interfaces used to create removable connections between cables and equipment.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
The contact insert positions insulated male pins or female sockets in the selected pattern. A shell and keying features guide mating, while a latch or corresponding recess retains the joined parts. Cable connectors add a boot and strain relief; chassis versions add panel mounting, PCB or wire termination and their specified shell-ground arrangement. Contact plating, termination method and mounting details are selection variables rather than cosmetic differences.
Contact count determines how many separate conductors can be brought through the interface, but equipment specifications assign their functions. Three-contact professional audio is one major configuration; larger inserts provide other connection possibilities. More contacts do not establish a higher current rating or a faster communications channel. Ratings must come from the chosen model and operating conditions, not from a three-contact product's datasheet applied to another insert.
The complete connection includes the cable, termination and receiving equipment. Cable jacket diameter must match the strain relief, and conductor size must fit the approved terminal. Shell continuity and panel bonding need to follow the intended grounding design. Sealing is also configuration-specific: an ordinary indoor connector and a weather-resistant assembly cannot be treated as equivalent simply because both use a locking metal body.
What turns activity into demand
For a product range or installation, the larger issue is maintaining a consistent and serviceable connection system. A part that looks familiar can still carry the wrong contact pattern, termination or circuit assignment. The family includes specified XLR cable and chassis connectors, with the three-pin topic treated as a distinct catalogue subject. Complete cable assemblies, adapters, miniature connector families and active signal-conversion products have their own supply boundaries. The representative image shows a three-contact pair and does not depict every contact count or certify a universal pinout.
