Valves
Valve is a mechanical device that modulates, isolates, reverses, or relieves the flow of a fluid within a pressure boundary by positioning a closure member relative to a seat; the pressure‐retaining assembly comprises a body and bonnet with internal trim (disc/ball/plug, seat, stem, cage or guide) and external sealing elements such as packing and gaskets, actuated manually or by pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic drives. Pressure parts are made from cast or forged metals including carbon and low-alloy steels, stainless and duplex steels, nickel alloys, copper alloys, cast iron and ductile iron; nonmetallic constructions use thermoplastics such as PVC, CPVC, PP, and PVDF or ceramic bodies for abrasion and high-temperature media, while corrosion-resistant linings (PTFE, PFA, rubber) and hardfacing or cladding (e.g., cobalt-based alloys) are applied to wetted surfaces; seating and secondary seals employ PTFE, PEEK, elastomers (EPDM, NBR, FKM), or metal-to-metal pairs. Principal types include linear isolation and throttling designs (gate, globe, diaphragm, pinch), rotary designs (ball, plug, butterfly), non-return check valves (swing, lift, tilting-disc, dual-plate wafer), pressure relief and safety valves (direct spring or pilot-operated), and purpose-built control valves (globe cage, eccentric plug, segment ball, high-performance butterfly) configured for continuous modulating service. Manufacture of metallic valves involves casting (sand or investment) or forging/barstock, heat treatment and solution or normalization cycles as applicable, nondestructive examination, precision machining of body cavities and trim, welding overlays and hardfacing on seats or throttling surfaces, surface finishing and cleanliness control, followed by assembly of trim, stems, packings, and actuators, seat lapping, hydrostatic and pneumatic tightness tests, and functional characterization; thermoplastic valves are injection-molded or machined from extruded stock and fusion- or solvent-joined, and ceramic valves are formed by dry pressing or isostatic compaction and sintered before finish-machining and assembly.
