An instrument transformer is used to obtain measurements of voltage or current levels or both in different high-voltage/high-current systems such as in transmission or distribution lines or industries. An instrument transformer convert current or voltage from a high level to a very low level before passing it to measuring instruments, effectively isolating the measurement devices from the high voltage or current on the line.

A current transformer responds to current in a primary conductor or winding and supplies a scaled secondary signal into the specified burden. An inductive voltage transformer is connected across the measured voltage and supplies a corresponding lower-voltage signal. Combined assemblies can place current and voltage functions in one physical housing, while keeping their individual ratios and duties defined.

Metering requires suitable ratio and phase accuracy over the normal operating range. Protection may require useful response during faults and transient conditions, when a conventional magnetic core can saturate. Secondary wiring and connected instruments contribute to burden; the accuracy of a component under one stated burden does not automatically describe the installed measurement chain.

Insulation and housing vary from indoor resin-cast assemblies to outdoor oil-paper or gas-insulated columns. Primary dielectric duty, secondary interfaces and terminal arrangements must suit the location. Current and voltage secondaries have different circuit behavior and handling requirements; their connections should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both devices are called transformers.

What turns activity into demand

Measurement and protection schemes determine the number of instrument-transformer positions. Accuracy class, burden and fault-duty requirements constrain each position; circuit count must be translated through the actual phase arrangement and current or voltage configuration.

The commercial boundary

The scope is instrument-transformer equipment for current or voltage measurement. Meters, relays, communications and primary power transformers remain separate supply items unless explicitly included in the package.
