A torque motor is a specialized form of electric motor which can operate indefinitely while stalled, that is, with the rotor blocked from turning, without incurring damage. In this mode of operation, the motor will apply a steady torque to the load (hence the name). A torque motor that cannot perform a complete rotation is known as a limited angle torque motor.

Bearing support, alignment, cooling and position feedback remain essential. Compare continuous torque at the installed cooling condition; peak electromagnetic torque does not establish the complete axis's sustained performance.

What turns activity into demand

Driven-machine duty, installed load and control requirements define motor selection. New equipment, replacement and retrofit create purchases, while winding, enclosure and drive compatibility determine the eligible motor.

The commercial boundary

Separate the bare motor, drive electronics, geared motor and complete machine. Enclosure, winding and application categories overlap; an integrated unit must not be counted twice across those categories.
