Breast Tissue Markers
Breast tissue markers are small, permanently implantable medical devices that are placed into the breast at the time of image-guided biopsy or surgery to mark the exact location of a lesion, biopsy site, or surgical cavity for future identification and treatment planning. They are typically composed of biocompatible, radiopaque materials such as titanium, stainless steel, nitinol, or specially formulated polymers, sometimes combined with bioresorbable carrier matrices, and are designed to be clearly visible on mammography, ultrasound, and/or MRI while producing minimal imaging artifacts. Delivered through a dedicated introducer needle or applicator under stereotactic, ultrasound, or MRI guidance, the marker remains in situ indefinitely, providing a durable reference point that enables radiologists and surgeons to relocate small or completely excised lesions, correlate findings across different imaging modalities, guide re-biopsy or lumpectomy, and support accurate radiation therapy targeting. As an implantable device used in the breast, a breast tissue marker must meet stringent standards for biocompatibility, mechanical stability, and positional integrity over time, while maintaining patient comfort and not interfering with subsequent diagnostic procedures or treatments.
