Medical Grade TPU Film
Medical-grade TPU film is a continuous, thermoplastic sheet of segmented polyurethane whose hydrogen-bonded hard domains (urethane/urea) microphase-separate within a flexible soft-segment matrix to produce an optically clear to matte, elastomeric, liquid-tight barrier with controllable vapor transport. Typical gauges are in the tens to a few hundred micrometres; the films are inherently plasticizer-free and low-extractables, conformable with low flex-noise, and exhibit stable optics when formulated with non-yellowing systems.
Product & engineering
Understand the product.
The chemistry used for these films is confined to polyether-TPU and polyester-TPU soft segments. Polyether systems built on saturated polyether polyols deliver hydrolytic stability, resilience in humid or aqueous service, and low-temperature elasticity. Polyester systems built on aliphatic polyester polyols deliver higher cut/tear resistance and modulus with very clean optics in dry service. Hard segments arise from diisocyanate–chain-extender condensation and establish the density of reversible physical cross-links; medical films predominantly employ aliphatic diisocyanate backbones to minimize chromophore formation. Formulations are tightly bounded to low-volatility stabilizers and process aids, with optional inert fillers (e.g., finely dispersed radiopaque or antistatic packages) where a specific function is required; no phthalate plasticizers or latex components are present.
The microstructure governs the property envelope observed at thin gauges. Representative cast-film values at 15–100 µm are tensile strength on the order of 25–70 MPa, 100 % secant modulus roughly 3–12 MPa, ultimate elongation 300–800 %, and tear resistance from tens to >100 kN/m depending on gauge and orientation; puncture force scales strongly with thickness and hard-segment fraction. Shore hardness typically spans A70–A95 across medical film grades. The soft-segment glass transition sits near −50…−30 °C, enabling cold-flex without embrittlement; practical thermal service is about −40…80 °C with a clean melt window around 170–220 °C. Monolithic films are liquid-proof yet moisture-vapor permeable by solution–diffusion, with flux increasing as thickness decreases and as soft-segment polarity rises; for thin dressing-grade films, MVTR commonly lies in the hundreds to low thousands g·m⁻²·day⁻¹ under elevated humidity/temperature test conditions. Microporous variants transmit vapor primarily via pore-mediated flow at higher flux. The polar backbone affords efficient heat, ultrasonic, and high-frequency sealing for seam formation; post-treatments such as corona or plasma elevate surface energy into the high-30s to mid-40s dyn/cm to anchor inks, coatings, and pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Manufacture is a clean, melt-based process using desiccated pellets, precision flat-die casting or blown-film extrusion with fine melt filtration and gear-pump metering to stabilize output, followed by quench on chilled or textured rolls to set gauge and surface. Inline gauges track thickness and gel count; the web is treated, slit, and wound under low-defect, low-bioburden conditions with interleaf protection. Microporous films introduce stretch-induced cavitation or leachable-phase steps to create controlled porosity. Composite constructions integrate nonwovens, textiles, or secondary films by thermal calendering or solvent-free reactive lines with residuals control; adhesive-coated versions employ medical acrylic or soft-silicone systems on primed TPU without compromising barrier or optics. Sterilization exposures (ethylene oxide, ionizing radiation within defined dose windows, selected steam cycles for suitable chemistries and gauges) are accommodated with predictable, chemistry-dependent shifts in color and modulus over life.
Within the medical scope the “types” are defined by soft-segment family and structure rather than broader polyurethane chemistries. Polyether-TPU film and polyester-TPU film appear as monolithic breathable barriers, high-flux microporous sheets, high-clarity skins, matte/embossed low-glare surfaces, radiopaque-filled variants, antistatic-modified variants, adhesive-coated backings, and textile-reinforced laminates. Across these forms, the same microphase-reinforced elasticity, clean melt, polar surface, and controllable vapor transport underpin use in transparent film dressings and incise drapes, negative-pressure therapy drapes and canister diaphragms, ostomy and drainage bag barriers, IV/enteral/urinary bag shells, inflatable cuffs and bladders, anesthesia and respiratory diaphragms, device covers and bellows, transdermal and wearable patch backings, catheter cuffs and jackets, orthopedic liners, and hygienic protective covers.
