Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) Turboexpander
An active magnetic bearing turboexpander is a rotating machine in which gas expands through a turbine while a feedback-controlled magnetic system supports the shaft. The turbine converts part of the gas stream's available expansion energy into shaft work. A coupled generator or compressor receives that work; the magnetic bearings control rotor position rather than create the expansion energy.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
A representative radial-inflow stage uses guide vanes or nozzles to accelerate and direct gas toward an expander wheel, which discharges approximately axially. Other turbine arrangements are possible. Flow, composition, inlet state and required outlet pressure determine the aerodynamic design. Expansion lowers gas temperature as work is extracted, which can serve a refrigeration process or require attention to the downstream gas state. A large pressure ratio can be managed through staged equipment rather than one universal wheel design.
Magnetic actuators and displacement sensors operate with a controller and amplifiers to maintain the rotor's support gap. Radial support and thrust control must accommodate wheel and seal forces throughout startup and loaded operation. Auxiliary bearings provide a defined support path when levitation is absent. The absence of normal oil-lubricated bearing contact can simplify a process interface, but gas cleanliness, material compatibility, seals, control stability and an engineered rundown remain necessary machine requirements.
In an integrated generator arrangement, the turbine drives a high-speed electrical rotor. Power electronics convert the generator output to the required supply interface. An expander loaded by a compressor follows a different work-transfer path. Net usable output depends on the actual pressure drop, mass flow, gas properties and equipment losses, including auxiliary electrical loads. A gas-pressure recovery machine does not burn additional fuel in its expander, but that fact does not establish zero emissions for the whole gas supply chain.
What turns activity into demand
Gas expansion machines with actively controlled magnetic rotor support, producing useful shaft work and cooling through an engineered pressure drop.
The commercial boundary
The product is an AMB-supported turboexpander machine or specified package. A bearing-only supply, a control valve and a complete liquefaction train have different boundaries. Generator-loaded and compressor-loaded packages should be compared with their actual scope of supply; pressure recovery and refrigeration can describe uses of the same machine rather than two independent equipment shipments.
