Active Magnetic Bearing
An active magnetic bearing supports a rotor without normal running contact by regulating magnetic forces in response to measured rotor position. Electromagnetic actuators, sensors, a controller and power amplifiers form a closed control loop. The bearing provides controlled support forces; the motor or turbine supplies the rotational torque.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
An active magnetic bearing works on the principle of electromagnetic suspension based on the induction of eddy currents in a rotating conductor. When an electrically conducting material is moving in a magnetic field, a current will be generated in the material that counters the change in the magnetic field (known as Lenz's Law). This generates a current that will result in a magnetic field that is oriented opposite to the one from the magnet. The electrically conducting material is thus acting as a magnetic mirror.
Active bearings have several advantages: they do not suffer from wear, have low friction, and can often accommodate irregularities in the mass distribution automatically, allowing rotors to spin around their centre of mass with very low vibration.
Radial actuators commonly use laminated magnetic cores and coils arranged around a ferromagnetic rotor surface to control two transverse directions. Axial actuators act on a thrust disc or a combined radial and axial geometry. Bias flux may come from electrical current or permanent magnets, while controlled coil currents adjust the supporting force. A permanent-magnet-biased design can still be active: its position loop remains essential to the installed machine.
Position sensors measure shaft displacement across the operating gap. The controller compares that signal with a target and commands amplifier current, producing effective bearing stiffness and damping. Eddy-current sensing is one possible measurement technology; it is not the general source of active levitation force. Control bandwidth, current limits, sensor conditioning and the flexible rotor's modes must be treated together. A controller that stabilizes one rotor is not automatically interchangeable with another simply because both bearings have the same bore.
Auxiliary or touchdown bearings support the rotor when levitation is unavailable and can receive it during a disturbance or fault. Their clearances and rundown capability are part of the system design. Non-contact running avoids normal rolling-contact wear and an oil supply at the magnetic support, but does not eliminate electrical consumption, actuator losses or maintenance of electronics and backup components. Available position and current signals can assist diagnosis; useful alarm limits depend on the machine and process.
What turns activity into demand
Feedback-controlled electromagnetic rotor support combining magnetic actuators, position sensing, power electronics and a tuned machine-control system.
The commercial boundary
The supplied product can be a magnetic-bearing actuator set or an integrated bearing system with sensors, controller and auxiliary bearings. A complete compressor, motor or turboexpander adds other functions and should be assessed as a separate machine supply. Passive magnetic support and a sensor-equipped conventional bearing are different architectures, even when their descriptions also mention magnetism or monitoring.
