A small distribution transformer is a comparatively low-power transformer serving a local distribution duty, using magnetically coupled windings to establish the required AC voltage relationship.

The active assembly combines a magnetic core, insulated windings, mechanical supports and terminal connections. Liquid designs add a sealed or conservator-based tank and heat-transfer path; dry designs use solid winding insulation and reject heat to air. Pole, pad, ground and indoor installations have different terminal protection, enclosure, handling and maintenance interfaces. A compact footprint should be considered with those installed clearances.

Distribution units commonly reduce network voltage for local consumption, while a suitable generation-interface design can raise the voltage delivered by an inverter or generator. Wind, photovoltaic and rail applications must be mapped to the actual distribution function: a traction transformer or bulk grid-connection power transformer does not become a small distribution transformer simply because it serves the same industry.

Load cycle, no-load and conductor losses, winding connection, impedance and site environment define the operating duty. Inverter interfaces can additionally introduce harmonic and switching stresses. Apparent-power capacity should be reviewed at the specified thermal conditions, with any application-specific winding or insulation requirements included in the offered design.
