A ball screw contains a threaded shaft, a matching nut and balls that circulate through return paths. Rotation creates linear movement with rolling rather than sliding contact at the thread interface.

A ball screw is a mechanical linear actuator that translates rotational motion to linear motion with little friction. A threaded shaft provides a helical raceway for ball bearings which act as a precision screw. As well as being able to apply or withstand high thrust loads, they can do so with minimum internal friction. They are made to close tolerances and are therefore suitable for use in situations in which high precision is necessary.
Lead sets travel per revolution and links motor speed to axis speed. Preload controls clearance, while screw diameter, support arrangement and length influence stiffness and speed limits.
Lubrication, contamination and thermal expansion affect repeatability. A selected accuracy grade describes the screw; the complete axis also depends on bearings, mounting and feedback.
