Polystyrene
Polystyrene is based on polymerised styrene; general-purpose and impact-modified grades serve distinct processing and end-use needs.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
Polystyrene is a type of polymer with thermoplastic properties produced from the petroleum-derived monomer, styrene. In solid form, it is a colorless and rigid plastic, but it may also be returned to a liquid state by heating, and used again for molding or extrusion. It is used to produce many products for industrial and consumer use. In fact, its presence as a plastic in everyday life is second only to polyethylene.
General-purpose grades can provide transparency and stiffness. Rubber modification improves impact behaviour but changes the optical and mechanical balance.
Melt flow, forming route and thermal exposure affect the converted part. Foamed polystyrene is a separate product form with different volume and density.
What turns activity into demand
Resin demand follows the mass of accepted moulded or extruded articles and the grades qualified for them. Solid articles and foamed products convert volume into polymer mass differently; resin, foam beads and converted-product revenue require separate accounting.
The commercial boundary
Separate solid resin, foam beads and converted articles.
