Centrifugal compressors, sometimes called radial compressors, are a sub-class of dynamic axisymmetric work-absorbing turbomachinery. They achieve a pressure rise by adding kinetic energy/velocity to a continuous flow of fluid through the rotor or impeller.

Gas properties, inlet conditions and speed affect the operating map. Surge and high-flow limits constrain the useful range. Recycle and other controls can maintain operation when demand changes.

What turns activity into demand

A high-capacity compressor needs an accepted low-load strategy. Process demand and control behaviour determine how much nameplate capacity is useful. Separate compressor trains, drivers and control or cooling systems. Design flow is not the minimum continuously useful process flow.
