Piezoelectric Actuators
A piezoelectric actuator uses the inverse piezoelectric effect to produce mechanical deformation when an electric field is applied.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
Piezoelectric actuators are ceramic elements used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy such as displacement or force by utilizing the piezoelectric longitudinal effect. A piezoelectric actuator converts an electrical signal into a precisely controlled physical displacement (stroke). If displacement is prevented, a useable force (blocking force) will develop. The precise movement control afforded by piezoelectric actuators is used to finely adjust machining tools, lenses, mirrors, or other equipment. A piezo actuator can be used to control hydraulic valves, act as a small-volume pump or special-purpose motor, and in other applications requiring movement or force. There are many applications where a piezoelectric actuator may be used, such as ultraprecise positioning and in the generation and handling of high forces or pressures in static or in dynamic situations.
Active ceramic layers and electrodes form the electromechanical element. Multilayer construction permits thin active layers and a different drive-voltage arrangement from assemblies of thicker individual discs. End pieces transfer force, while a protective coating or housing addresses the operating environment. A preloaded actuator assembly also adds mechanical parts; a bare stack does not supply its own guidance, preload or positioning control.
Free displacement and blocking force describe different limiting conditions. The installed movement depends on the actuator and load stiffness, mechanical preload and geometry. Brittle ceramic requires appropriate loading and protection against unintended tension, shear or bending. A flexure-guided assembly can convert or amplify movement, but its output force and dynamics must be evaluated with that mechanism rather than copied from the bare stack's rating.
Voltage-driven ferroelectric actuators can exhibit hysteresis and a gradual position change after a voltage step. A suitable position sensor and closed control loop can reduce these effects at the measured output. Fast operation also depends on the amplifier, electrical capacitance, attached mass and mechanical resonance. A rapid initial response is not the same as a settled, accurate positioning move; a quoted unloaded resonance is not a complete system bandwidth.
What turns activity into demand
Piezo actuation can support precise adjustments, fast switching or active control. Its value depends on how the small deformation reaches the tool, valve or optical element and how that output is measured. The product can be a piezoelectric element or a packaged actuator with defined preload and interfaces. A nanopositioning stage includes additional guides, sensors and control functions. Piezoelectric sensors use a related material response to measure loads or motion rather than supply the same actuation function. Stack, bending and shear configurations need distinct comparisons rather than a universal force-to-travel ranking.
