Single-Use Bioreactors
Single-use bioreactors use a disposable fluid-contact vessel or assembly within a controlled culture system, commonly supported by reusable hardware.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
A single-use bioreactor or disposable bioreactor is a bioreactor with a disposable bag instead of a culture vessel. Typically, this refers to a bioreactor in which the lining in contact with the cell culture will be plastic, and this lining is encased within a more permanent structure (typically, either a rocker or a cuboid or cylindrical steel support). Commercial single-use bioreactors have been available since the end of the 1990s and are now made by several well-known producers (See below).
Mixing, gas transfer, sensors and the disposable contact pathway form a matched configuration. Working volume and process requirements matter alongside nominal vessel size. Single-use does not mean every controller or mechanical component is discarded.
What turns activity into demand
Batch frequency, validated assembly configuration and working volume generate consumable demand beyond installed capacity.
The commercial boundary
Separate disposable assemblies from reusable supports, controllers, media and manufacturing services.
Does nominal vessel size equal culture volume?
No. The supported working range depends on the configured vessel and process, so capacity comparisons need that range.
