Bipolar Membranes
Bipolar Membranes covers joined ion-exchange layers enabling water dissociation under an electric field. Selective transport can depend on pores, solubility-diffusion or fixed ionic groups; module form alone does not establish the mechanism.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
Bipolar membranes carry out the dissociation of water in the presence of an electric field. These membranes are composed of three parts: an anion-exchange layer, a cation-exchange layer, and a hydrophilic interface at their junction. When a direct current is applied, the water molecules migrate into the hydrophilic layer where they are split into H+ and OH-. Bipolar membrane(BPM) appeared commercially at the end of the 1980s.
The distinguishing feature is joined ion-exchange layers enabling water dissociation under an electric field. Specify feed composition, concentration, temperature and driving force. Compare selectivity with flux under the same conditions, then check fouling, cleaning and integrity. Pore size does not characterize a dense gas membrane or an ion-exchange film; transport mechanism and module seals define different failure boundaries.
What turns activity into demand
Separation throughput creates demand through validated area, flux and replacement life. Feed pretreatment, recovery and cleaning determine module count.
The commercial boundary
Separate sheet, element and packaged system; water filtration, gas separation and ion transport use different mechanisms and units.
What must accompany a membrane's nominal separation rating?
