Recloser
An automatic circuit recloser is distribution switching equipment that detects assigned fault conditions, opens the circuit and can perform a configured sequence of reclosing operations.

Product & engineering
Understand the product.
The Recloser industry can be broken down into several segments, Hydraulic Control, Electronic Control, etc.
Across the world, the major players cover Eaton, Schneider Electric, ABB, etc.
There are two basic types of recloser control schemes: an integral hydraulic control or an electronic control located in a separate cabinet. Hydraulic recloser control is used in most single-phase reclosers and in three-phase recloser types 6H and V6H and is built as an integral part of the recloser. Electronic recloser controls are used in most three-phase reclosers and in the single-phase recloser types VXE, NOVA STS, and NOVA¹. Compared with the hydraulic control, electronic controls are more flexible, more easily customized and programmed, and many have advanced protection, metering, and automation functionality.
The primary assembly contains current-carrying terminals, interrupters, insulation and a mechanism that opens and closes the poles. Some historical constructions interrupt within oil; modern vacuum constructions can use oil, air or solid insulation around the vacuum interrupters. Interruption medium and external pole insulation should therefore be identified separately. Pole-mounted and substation arrangements, as well as single-phase and multi-phase operation, have different connection, enclosure and service requirements.
Hydraulic control designs can use a series trip coil and plunger to respond to overcurrent, with fluid-operated timing and counting mechanisms establishing the sequence. Electronic systems use measurement inputs and controller logic to evaluate current and, where provided, voltage or other conditions, then command the operating mechanism. Spring, solenoid or magnetic-actuator arrangements supply and transmit the switching energy according to the particular design. The control technology does not imply that every recloser has the same sensing features or communications.
Reclosing behavior is set for the feeder: trip characteristics, fast or delayed operations, open intervals, reset and lockout must coordinate with upstream devices and downstream fuses or sectionalizing equipment. Distributed generation, source health, underground faults and the chosen phase-operation scheme can change when reclosing is appropriate. The number of attempts is configurable within the offered system and network policy; automatically closing after every fault would not represent the intended protection function.
What turns activity into demand
Specify interruption duty and installation first, then define the trip, dead-time and lockout sequence around the actual feeder and its other sources. The report family represents recloser switching equipment with its required protection/control arrangement. A separately supplied controller, a manual load switch, a sectionalizer and a conventional breaker without the defined automatic sequence are different commercial items. Where hardware and control are sold as a package, the controller is not an additional complete recloser for counting purposes.
