When does announced peptide capacity become usable supply?

Construction, process start-up and dependable output are different milestones. The critical constraint may move from synthesis to purification, release or customer qualification.

The manufacturer’s question

Which capacity announcements can change the supply available for a particular peptide programme?

Count milestones separately. Reactor volume cannot be added to purification throughput to produce a meaningful market supply figure.

Keep the capacity milestones separate.

Capacity belongs to a process and a product.

A peptide programme cannot be evaluated through reactor litres alone. Sequence, synthesis route, crude impurity profile, downstream processing and release requirements affect how much acceptable material a process can deliver.

Bachem's technical overview describes purification and subsequent isolation steps, including chromatographic separation and fraction selection. [1] These stages explain why upstream equipment is not a complete measure of supply. This perspective concerns manufacturing capacity; it makes no claims about clinical effectiveness or treatment demand.

Express each constraint in the same output unit.

A practical capacity assessment would translate synthesis, purification, isolation and release into compatible quantities of final acceptable product per period, for the specified process. The limiting stage constrains throughput. Adding the capacities of successive stages would count the same material repeatedly.

Even that bottleneck calculation needs batch scheduling, changeovers, cleaning, yield, availability and the ability to operate a product at the site. A facility suitable for one sequence or process is not automatically interchangeable with another.

For a buyer, “capacity available” must therefore mean capacity accessible for its programme under an achievable transfer, qualification and delivery schedule. For a producer, a generic demand forecast leaves this competitive distinction unresolved.

Separate a reported milestone from a future date.

Bachem reports that Building K entered operation in 2026 and had produced commercial GMP material by its July update. [2] This is stronger evidence than a construction announcement, but it does not disclose unrestricted output for every product.

PolyPeptide's 2025 business review reports that its Braine-l'Alleud asset reached target utilisation at year end, while ramp-up of new Malmö modules was planned for 2027. [3] A future ramp-up date should remain future capacity in a supply assessment.

Track each announcement through dated updates. A changed target is new information about timing, not proof that the full original capacity has already arrived. Comparable histories need original dates, revised dates and the evidence for achieved output.

Locate the uncertainty before pricing the opportunity.

A market study for a capacity decision should distinguish installed equipment, demonstrated operation, stable throughput and the share accessible to external customers. Dedicated programmes and contractual commitments may make technically usable capacity unavailable to another buyer.

The assessment changes when a downstream constraint is resolved, transfer timelines move, a programme changes its production requirements or a facility demonstrates stable commercial output. None of these can be inferred from the headline investment amount alone.

The actionable deliverable is a programme-relevant capacity ledger with milestone evidence and explicit gaps. Where yield, scheduling or committed capacity is undisclosed, a scenario range is more defensible than an apparently precise global kilogram total.
