Knife gate valves: compare the duty before the invoice.

Slurry characteristics, shut-off requirements and maintenance access determine the useful valve comparison and the cost of an interruption.

The purchasing question

Which valve configuration can isolate this process reliably?

A low purchase price can sit beside a costly interruption. Material, sealing and duty conditions connect the valve to operating value.

Specify the process before comparing offers.

Isolation and flow control are different tasks.

Valmet’s slurry-valve discussion distinguishes isolation service from severe control service and describes the influence of abrasive solids and process conditions on material selection. [1] The first comparison is therefore the task and duty envelope, rather than nominal diameter alone.

A knife gate valve selected to isolate a line should not be evaluated as though it were automatically suitable for continuous throttling. Compare the stated operating function, pressure and medium for each offer.

Wear moves the cost beyond acquisition.

Solids and repeated operation create different demands on the gate, sealing elements and actuator. The procurement comparison should identify which parts are serviceable and which conditions change the expected maintenance plan.

Assess the complete interruption: isolating the line, gaining access, replacing parts, testing and restarting. An inexpensive spare can still require a lengthy shutdown. Its cost is separate from the operational consequence of the repair.

Replacement follows service conditions.

Valmet’s mineral-processing overview connects abrasive slurry applications with component reliability and maintenance. [2] A market model should distinguish valves installed in new plants from valves and spares purchased for the existing operating base.

Replacement can change after a process modification, altered slurry characteristics or a different maintenance strategy. An installed-valve count needs those operating conditions before it can become an annual purchasing estimate.

Define the comparable offer.

Hold duty, materials, shut-off requirements and actuator scope constant. Compare the delivered valve, commissioning needs, service access and replacement parts together.

For the supplier, separate complete-valve revenue from recurring service parts. For the plant, use inspection and maintenance records to test the operating case rather than transferring a service-life claim from a different process.
