Behentrimonium Chloride, listed under INCI as Behentrimonium Chloride and identified by CAS Registry Number 17301 53 0 and EINECS 241 327 0, is a straight chain C22 aliphatic quaternary ammonium chloride used as a cationic surfactant, hair conditioning active, antistatic agent and cationic emulsifier. The compound is chemically designated as docosyltrimethylammonium chloride and is also referred to in industrial shorthand as BTAC 228. It has the molecular formula C25H54ClN and a molecular weight of 404.16 g per mol. The molecule consists of a behenyl, or docosyl, long chain alkyl group bonded to a trimethylammonium cation with chloride as the counterion, giving the material a permanent cationic charge and strong substantivity to negatively charged keratin surfaces in hair and skin.
Industrial Behentrimonium Chloride is manufactured from C22 oleochemical feedstocks derived from behenic acid, behenyl alcohol and high erucic rapeseed or related vegetable oil chemistry. The fatty chain is converted into behenyl dimethyl tertiary amine, followed by quaternization with methyl chloride to form docosyltrimethylammonium chloride. Personal care grades are supplied as white to pale yellow waxy solids, flakes, pellets, granules, pastilles and carrier modified concentrates. Standard high active grades contain about 75% to 85% active matter, with the balance consisting mainly of isopropanol, ethanol, dipropylene glycol, water or other processing carriers. Medium active grades around 70% active matter improve melting, dosing and dispersion in large scale formulation systems. Lower active grades combine Behentrimonium Chloride with cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol or related fatty alcohols for direct incorporation into conditioner and mask bases.
Behentrimonium Chloride has a wax like physical profile, faint amine or solvent odor, low volatility, cationic surface activity, limited cold water dispersibility and effective dispersion in heated aqueous, alcoholic and fatty alcohol phases. Its melting behavior varies with active matter, carrier composition and physical form, with cosmetic grade materials generally processed in heated manufacturing systems rather than ambient water addition. The C22 alkyl chain provides lubricity, softening and hydrophobic deposition, while the quaternary ammonium center provides charge based adhesion to hair fibers. In structured hair care systems, the ingredient combines with fatty alcohols to form cationic lamellar phases that control viscosity, cream texture, rinse feel, combing performance and conditioning deposition.
The principal use of Behentrimonium Chloride is in hair conditioners, hair masks, treatment creams, repair conditioners and salon care products. It delivers wet combing improvement, dry combing improvement, detangling, static reduction, flyaway control, softening, smooth afterfeel and conditioning deposition on damaged, dyed, bleached, coarse and chemically treated hair. Formulation use levels in personal care products commonly fall within the 0.5% to 3.0% range, depending on active matter, product format, regulatory limit and conditioning target. In conditioning shampoos, hair rinses, leave on treatments, styling creams, mousses, hair color systems, relaxers and straightening products, Behentrimonium Chloride is used where cationic conditioning and surface manageability are required alongside surfactants, dyes, polymers, silicones or fatty alcohol structuring agents.
The global Behentrimonium Chloride market reached USD 170.39 million in 2025, with commercial finished product sales of 28,455 tons and an average selling price of 5,988 USD per ton. The market is expected to increase to USD 177.48 million in 2026 and reach USD 216.60 million by 2032, yielding a CAGR of 3.38% from 2026 to 2032. Volume demand is forecast to rise to 33,720 tons by 2032, with growth concentrated in hair conditioner and treatment formulations.
Behentrimonium Chloride is a C22 quaternary ammonium conditioning surfactant derived from long chain fatty alcohol and fatty amine chemistry. The upstream chain is centered on C22 fatty alcohol, behenyl dimethylamine or equivalent tertiary amine intermediates, methyl chloride based quaternization, alcohol or glycol carrier adjustment, solid forming and personal care grade impurity control. Commercial grades are sold as high active flakes, pellets, pastilles, solvent based grades and conditioner base concentrates. In 2025, BTAC 78% to 85% grades accounted for 12,125 tons, or 42.6% of global finished product volume; BTAC 70% to below 78% grades accounted for 9,427 tons, or 33.1%. The 2025 market contained approximately 20.7 thousand tons of 100% active Behentrimonium Chloride, representing an average active matter content of 72.6% across commercial finished products.
Regional demand is tied to downstream personal care formulation locations. Asia Pacific was the largest region in 2025, with 11,573 tons and USD 64.82 million, followed by North America at 6,775 tons and USD 47.69 million, Europe at 5,608 tons and USD 35.82 million, South America at 3,190 tons and USD 15.91 million, and Middle East and Africa at 1,309 tons and USD 6.15 million. Asia Pacific accounted for 40.7% of global volume, North America 23.8%, Europe 19.7%, South America 11.2%, and Middle East and Africa 4.6%.
The supplier base remains concentrated among established C22 cationic surfactant producers. Samyang KCI and Global Amines together shipped 9,036 tons in 2025, equivalent to 31.8% of global volume. The top six manufacturers accounted for 18,287 tons, or 64.3%, with Samyang KCI, Global Amines, Thor Group, Croda International, Syensqo and Evonik forming the main global supplier group. The top ten suppliers accounted for about 85.2% of global volume, reflecting the technical and supply chain barriers created by C22 feedstock availability, quaternization control, low odor performance, solid grade handling and personal care qualification.
Demand is structurally concentrated in hair conditioning systems. Hair Conditioner consumed 17,270 tons in 2025, or 60.7% of global volume. Hair Treatment consumed 6,997 tons, or 24.6%. Conditioning Shampoo consumed 2,262 tons, or 8.0%, while Others consumed 1,926 tons, or 6.8%. This application structure reflects BTAC’s core function in rinse off conditioners, masks, treatment creams, leave on care and selected two in one cleansing systems, where C22 cationic adsorption provides soft feel, combability and antistatic performance.
