Definition

Reverse Brayton cryocooler is a closed cycle gas refrigeration machine that produces cryogenic cooling by operating the Brayton thermodynamic cycle in the reverse direction. A gaseous working fluid, commonly helium, neon or a defined gas mixture, is compressed, cooled against the surroundings, precooled in a recuperative heat exchanger and expanded nearly isentropically through a turboexpander. Expansion reduces the gas temperature and produces mechanical work, after which the low pressure cold gas absorbs heat from the external load and returns through the recuperative heat exchanger to precool the incoming high pressure stream. The system normally includes a compressor, aftercooler, recuperative heat exchanger, gas bearing turbocompressor or turboexpander, cold heat exchanger, piping, purification equipment and process controls. The circulating refrigerant generally remains in the gaseous state, while an external process fluid may be cooled, condensed or subcooled. Continuous unidirectional flow, high speed gas bearing turbomachinery and the absence of reciprocating components at the cold end provide low exported vibration, stable refrigeration and suitability for distributed or remotely located cryogenic loads.
