Protocatechualdehyde is a small phenolic aldehyde (3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde) consisting of a benzene ring bearing two adjacent phenolic hydroxyl groups in the meta position to an aromatic formyl group, giving the molecular formula C₇H₆O₃ and the structure HO–C₆H₃(OH)–CHO. It is typically obtained as a crystalline solid, weakly acidic due to the catechol-type hydroxyls, and is moderately soluble in polar organic solvents and slightly soluble in water. In chemical and biological contexts, protocatechualdehyde is recognized as an oxidative or degradative intermediate of various natural phenolics and lignin-related aromatics, and its ortho-dihydroxy motif confers metal-chelating, redox-active and nucleophilic properties that underlie its use as a reference compound in studies of antioxidant, enzyme-modulating and other bioactivities, as well as a useful building block in the synthesis of more complex aromatic molecules, ligands and polymers.
