Plastic coatings for interior parts are typically categorized along two dimensions: material system and coating architecture. Material systems include solventborne polyurethane (1K or 2K), waterborne acrylic/polyurethane dispersions, UV-curable acrylates, and specialty soft-feel coatings. Coating architectures follow a layered structure, generally consisting of a substrate-specific adhesion promoter or primer, a pigmented basecoat providing color and gloss, and an optional clearcoat (topcoat) for gloss control, surface protection, or tactile effect. In some cases, direct-to-substrate (DTS) formulations are used for polypropylene or TPO parts without primer. Typical coating consumption ranges from 20 to 80 g/m², depending on part geometry, number of layers, and desired film build. For rigid injection-molded parts (e.g., PC/ABS bezels), dry film thickness is usually 15–30 µm per layer. For soft-feel applications or parts requiring a luxurious matte finish, film builds may exceed 60 µm across two or more coats. Key technical characteristics of interior plastic coatings include low VOC and odor emissions (to comply with VDA 278, PV 3341), excellent adhesion on low surface energy plastics, resistance to abrasion (per ISO 11998 or Taber CS-10), scratch and mar resistance, chemical resistance (e.g., sunscreen, hand cream per PV 3929), and thermal aging stability (typically tested at 90–120°C for 500–1000 hours). Soft-feel coatings additionally require high elastomer compatibility and mechanical resilience under repeated finger contact or pressure. Application trends show increasing demand for low-gloss (≤10 GU @ 60°), soft-touch surfaces, particularly in electric vehicles and premium interior segments. Waterborne and UV-curable systems are increasingly adopted to reduce solvent emissions and meet regional environmental regulations, particularly in EU and China. Direct-to-PP coatings are gaining traction to streamline process costs and eliminate flame treatment or adhesion promoters. Typical coating processes involve multi-stage spraying with flash-off and baking steps. For solventborne systems, curing is performed at 60–80°C for 15–30 minutes. UV systems are cured with medium-pressure mercury lamps or LED arrays, achieving instant polymerization. Surface pretreatment, such as flame or corona discharge, may be applied to enhance substrate wettability and coating adhesion. Testing methods and performance requirements are generally dictated by OEM specifications such as VW TL 226, Daimler DBL 5416, BMW GS 97034, GM GMW14797, and Toyota TSH6500G. Standardized tests include cross-cut adhesion (ISO 2409), gloss level (ISO 2813), abrasion resistance (ISO 9352), chemical resistance (PV 3929), fogging and VOC content (VDA 278), and color fastness under artificial light (ISO 105-B02). Coatings must consistently pass environmental simulation cycles, including heat/humidity aging, UV exposure, and thermal shock.
