Amino acids are a class of organic molecules composed of a basic amino group (-NH2), an acidic carboxyl group (-COOH), and an organic R group (or side chain) specific to each amino acid. Amino acids are constituents of proteins and metabolic intermediates. They form peptide bonds through reactions between amino and carboxyl groups, thereby creating chain-like structures in proteins and peptides. Amino acids are categorized into three types: essential amino acids (which cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from food), non-essential amino acids (which can be synthesized by the human body), and conditional amino acids (which may become essential under specific circumstances). Amino acids are commonly used as supplements in cell culture media and metabolic research because they are essential for cell growth and metabolism. These amino acids are manufactured according to stringent pharmaceutical and medical application standards to ensure high purity, absence of contaminants, and stable quality and potency suitable for pharmaceutical preparation and medical applications. The term "pharmaceutical amino acids" is sometimes referred to by third-party analysts as pharmaceutical grade amino acids or cGMP quality amino acids. Pharmaceutical grade amino acids undergo additional purification steps and/or additional testing, including endotoxin testing.
