Ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, drinking alcohol, spirits, or simply alcohol) is an organic chemical compound. Industrial Ethanol is a type of ethanol used in industrial applications, and also implies ethanol produced for purposes other than consumption in beverage form. Industrial ethanol has a wide variety of uses, including as an ingredient in food preservatives, fragrances and cosmetics, as well as in pharmaceutical ethanol when administering shots to patients. Industrial ethanol is also known as one of the ingredients used to make vinegar. Globally, fuel ethanol accounts for 73% of production, with beverage ethanol at 17% and industrial ethanol at 10%. Industrial ethanol can further be separated into two types-fermented and synthetic. The difference between these two types is found in their manufacturing method and source ingredients. The primary ingredient for fermented ethanol is agricultural crops, such as sugarcane or corn, and alcohol fermentation is carried out courtesy of an organism called yeast, with the ensuing chemical process yielding fermented ethanol. This same naturally occurring yeast is also used when making ethanol for beverage use. Pharmaceutical ethanol is used in the pharmaceutical industry for manufacturing of products such as anesthetics, antiseptics, drugs, liniments, lotions, and also for cosmetics such as fragrances, deodorants and shampoos.
Global Pharmaceutical Ethanol key players include Cargill, Greenfield, Euro-Alkohol, Cristal Union, CropEnergies, etc. Global top five manufacturers hold a Production Market Share over 30%. China accounts for the most Production Market Share, which have a share over 30%, followed by Europe. In terms of product, Low Purity is the largest segment, with a Production Market Share over 65%. And in terms of application, the largest application is Pharmaceutical and Medical, followed by Personal Care & Cosmetic.
This report quantifies the global Pharmaceutical Ethanol market in terms of revenue (US$ million) and, where applicable, sales volume (K MT), using 2025 as the base year and providing annual historical and forecast data for 2021–2032.
