Optical fiber patch cord is a pre-terminated optical fiber cable assembly consisting of one or more lengths of optical fiber with factory-fitted connectors at one or both ends, used to establish removable optical links between distribution frames, equipment ports and passive components in fiber communication systems. It is distinguished from bulk fiber cable by having polishing, endface geometry and connector performance fully finished in production, and from pigtails by having connectors on both ends rather than one. In terms of transmission characteristics, optical fiber patch cords are commonly classified into single-mode and multimode types according to core size, numerical aperture and operating wavelength window, and into simplex, duplex and multi-fiber formats according to fiber count and geometry, while at the connector level they may adopt SC, LC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP and other standardized ferrule and housing interfaces in various polarity and keying configurations. The cable portion typically comprises a silica-based core–cladding glass fiber with primary coating, surrounded by tight or loose buffer layers, aramid yarn or other strength members and an outer jacket formulated from PVC, LSZH or other polymeric compounds with defined mechanical, flammability and environmental properties; the connector assemblies incorporate precision zirconia or metal ferrules, molded or machined housings, spring mechanisms and boot structures to control fiber alignment, strain relief and bend radius. Manufacturing involves fiber preparation, buffer and coating stripping, cleaning and cleaving, insertion and fixing of the fiber into the connector ferrule using adhesive or mechanical retention, curing, endface grinding and multi-stage polishing to specified radii and apex offsets, followed by interferometric geometry inspection and optical testing for insertion loss, return loss and endface quality, with the complete patch cord then jacketed, labeled and packaged under controlled conditions to ensure mechanical robustness, optical stability and connector repeatability over its specified service environment.
