Normal Dodecyl Mercaptan (n-Dodecyl Mercaptan, DDM) refers to a linear C₁₂ alkanethiol (CH₃–(CH₂)₁₁–SH) produced primarily via thiol–ene addition between hydrogen sulfide and linear α-olefins, yielding a high-purity, straight-chain thiol with a reactive sulfhydryl group. It is a key chain-transfer agent in free-radical polymerization, particularly in emulsion and solution processes for styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR), acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber (NBR), ABS resins, and related copolymers, where it provides precise regulation of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and polymer branching.
