Mo-99 serves as a parent isotope, decaying into Tc-99m through electron capture. The beauty of Mo-99 lies in its relatively longer half-life, making it suitable for the production of radiopharmaceuticals. On the other hand, Tc-99m is a short-lived isotope that emits gamma rays, making it ideal for medical imaging. Mo-99 is often fixed onto a carrier, typically as molybdate, and produced through nuclear reactions. As Mo-99 undergoes decay, it releases a single electron and transforms into Tc-99m. What's fascinating about Tc-99m is its metastable state—it exists in an unstable form, releasing gamma rays to return to a more stable state. Tc-99m is extensively used in nuclear medicine, especially in techniques like Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). This isotope provides valuable insights into the functioning of organs and tissues, playing a pivotal role in diagnostics and treatment planning. Global Mo-99 and Tc-99m are mainly produced in Belgium (BR-2), the Netherlands (HFR), the Czech Republic (LVR-15), Poland (Maria), Australia (OPAL) and South Africa (SAFARI-1), accounting for 10% of the world's Mo-99 and Tc-99m production. 85% share.
