Marine urea solution is a high-purity aqueous solution of synthetic urea in demineralized water, specifically formulated as a nitrogen-based reductant for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems on marine diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gas to nitrogen and water. In commercial practice it is typically supplied as a defined-concentration grade (e.g. around 40% urea by mass, often referred to as AUS 40), manufactured by dissolving low-biuret, low-metal urea in treated water under controlled conditions to meet strict limits on alkalinity, insoluble matter, trace metals and other contaminants that could foul injectors or poison catalysts. The product is handled as a non-combustible liquid stored in dedicated tanks and dosing systems on board, and is classified and quality-controlled as an emissions-control reagent rather than as a fertilizer, with specifications designed to ensure stable decomposition to ammonia in the exhaust stream and reliable SCR performance over the vessel’s operating range.
