Malonic acid, also called propanedioic acid, is a precursor to specialty polyesters. It is a dibasic organic acid whose diethyl ester is used in syntheses of vitamins B1 and B6, barbiturates, and numerous other valuable compounds. Malonic acid itself is rather unstable and has few applications. Its calcium salt occurs in beetroot, but the acid itself is usually prepared by hydrolyzing diethyl malonate. It undergoes the usual reactions of carboxylic acids as well as facile cleavage into acetic acid and carbon dioxide. Derivatives’ data is in section 7.2.
Malonic acid industry has low technology barrier and is labor intensive industry. Currently, there are several producing companies in the world malonic acid industry. The main market players are Lonza, Trace Zero and Tateyamakasei.
In consumption market, Europe and China are the mainly consumption regions due to the bigger demand of downstream applications. These two regions occupied 71% of the global consumption volume in total.
Malonic acid has two types, which include pharmaceutical grade malonic acid and technical grade malonic acid.
