Mechanical seal refers to at least a pair of end faces perpendicular to the axis of rotation in the fluid pressure and compensation mechanism of elasticity (or magnetic force) and auxiliary seals to maintain the fit and relative sliding under the cooperation of the device to prevent fluid leakage. The working principle of mechanical seal is under the action of spring force and medium pressure, the two sealing end surfaces closely fit so that the junction between the sealing end surfaces forms a continuous (non-contact) or intermittent (contact) of the liquid film or gas film, forming a seal of the pressurized medium.
Contact mechanical seal is the earliest and most used class of mechanical face seal. The basic elements of the contact mechanical seal include friction, compensation mechanism, auxiliary sealing ring, and transmission anti-rotation mechanism. Friction includes rotating ring (dynamic ring) and stationary ring (static ring); compensation mechanism consists of elastic components, such as springs, bellows, etc.; auxiliary seals include dynamic ring sealing ring, static ring sealing ring, gland sealing ring, etc.; transmission and anti-rotation mechanism includes transmission pin, anti-rotation pin, locking transmission device. A dry gas seal is a new non-contact mechanical seal using gas lubrication to seal the end face. A dry gas seal is a new type of advanced, non-contact mechanical end seal developed in the late 1960s based on gas dynamic pressure bearing. Dry gas seals utilize the principle of fluid dynamics to realize the non-contact operation of the sealing face by opening a dynamic pressure groove on the sealing face.
In 1885, mechanical seals first appeared in England as a patent. After entering the 20th century, mechanical seals began to be gradually applied in industrial production activities, along with upstream basic materials, sealing theory, downstream industry needs, and other continuous innovations and developments.
Mechanical seals can be divided into Compressor Mechanical Seals, Pump Mechanical Seals, Mixer Mechanical Seals, Turbine Mechanical Seals, and other types according to the kind of equipment; the type of seal (according to the structure and design of the form of classification) can be divided into According to seal types (categorized by structure and design form), they can be divided into Spring Seals, Split Seals, Bellow Seals, Cartridge Seals, and other types.
Mechanical seals are widely used in downstream industries: as one of the basic parts of the host, they are commonly used in Oil and Gas, Chemicals, Water Treatment, Paper and Pulp, Pharmaceuticals, and other industries. The downstream customers mainly include mechanical seal modification, spare parts sales, and seal product repair for the existing units of petrochemicals, coal chemicals, and other end customers, as well as supporting mechanical seals for the units of host plants.
Main features of the industry
①Large-scale, high-parameter, and high-reliability mechanical seal products have become the development trend. With the improvement of the globalization of the equipment manufacturing industry, large-scale petrochemical complete sets of equipment, large-scale LNG complete sets of equipment, deep-sea and deep-earth oil and gas resources extraction equipment, such as large-scale, large-scale, green, integrated, high-parameter high-end demand for mechanical seals continues to increase, especially large-scale petrochemical, aerospace, nuclear, special pumps and other high-end equipment in the industry on the mechanical seals of the technical requirements of the increasingly high. Seal products and sealing technology are expected to focus on the following three directions: according to the host production process parameters for special design, personalized design and manufacturing, research and development of new processes applicable to high-parameter, high-performance seals and sealing materials, sealing devices in extreme operating conditions and the best design conditions for long cycles of safe and stable operation.
②Stricter leakage detection standards, longer operating life. Due to the mechanical seal's customer awareness of energy saving and environmental protection, the mechanical seals from the past purely controlled the amount of liquid leakage to the current control of gas volatiles escape, the requirements to achieve a real “zero leakage”, “zero escape”, to ensure production safety, to achieve environmental protection. At the same time, to meet the host's long cycle of stable operation and improve the host's operating efficiency, the mechanical seal service life requirements are longer to extend the host's maintenance cycle and operation cycle.
③From the past to emphasize the development of a separate seal body to the importance of the entire seal system, including the seal body and sealing the auxiliary system. In fluid machinery, the mechanical seal is one of the most demanding working conditions of the components; in high temperatures, high pressure, easy to corrode, high-speed rotation of the working environment to achieve the seal is very difficult, but also difficult to seal dynamic monitoring. The reasonable use of a sealing auxiliary system improves the working environment of the seal, can greatly extend the service life of mechanical seals, enhances the reliability of mechanical seals, and expands the application range of mechanical seals.
In different industries, the working environment of the host and working conditions are characterized by different; even in the same industry, there are differences in customer requirements for the host. Therefore, the mechanical seal industry has a typical personalized customized production characteristic. The general business model is for mechanical seal manufacturers to participate in the host plant, design institute, and end customer bidding; in determining the winning enterprise, the two sides sign a technical agreement or contract; mechanical seal manufacturers according to the specific needs of different customers to carry out the technical design of the product, the organization of the production, after the factory test delivered to the customer to use. As mechanical seals are a kind of wearing parts, customers usually need to replace new seals after a certain period of use or repair the seal products of high value; in this case, the company will sign a supply contract directly with the end customer.
For the entire sealing industry, the market can be divided into the incremental market and stock market, of which the incremental market refers to the new project supporting the market. Usually, this kind of market directs customers for the host machine equipment manufacturers, such as compressor plants, pumps, mixing kettle manufacturers, etc., mechanical seals downstream of the industry's investment in fixed assets and technological transformation projects determine the incremental demand for mechanical seals in the market. Incremental business for the industry guarantees future performance growth, and its market competition is very fierce.
The stock market refers to the petrochemical plant that has entered the driving state due to normal wear and tear and the need to regularly replace the seal products of the market. Direct customers for petrochemical companies, such as SABIC, Mobil, Sinopec, PetroChina, INEOS, and so on, typically maintain a high gross margin and a more stable modest revenue growth.
Mechanical seals are worn parts, especially for high temperature, high pressure, high speed, toxic, and other media. Mechanical seals usually need to be replaced every 1-3 years, so the stock market demand for mechanical seals is more stable. Mechanical seals industry market demand and industrial investment in fixed assets are closely related to the situation, directly affected by the host equipment corresponding to the downstream industry market demand. When the fixed asset investment expansion, the mechanical seal industry, the downstream terminal sector will produce linked growth and drive the mechanical seal industry market demand expansion.
The oil and gas industry accounted for 41.32% and 41.42% of the mechanical seals market in 2022 and 2023, respectively, showing a steady growth trend. Supported by strong asset utilization, improved repair and maintenance spending by mechanical seal customers in 2023, and larger project activity and short-cycle investments that will continue to support global demand, the outlook for the oil and gas industry is highly dependent on the overall macroeconomic environment, including fuel demand, demand growth in mature markets and developing regions, and changes in the regulatory environment.
The chemical industry accounted for 23.22% and 23.19% of the mechanical seals market in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The slight share reduction is related to the current tensions and political unrest in the energy sector, with customer spending remaining resilient for the third consecutive year in 2023, following the negative impact of the 2020 pandemic on demand for chemical products. Customer repair and maintenance budgets have improved, and mechanical seal bookings have broadly returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 and 2022. The outlook for the chemical industry remains heavily dependent on global economic conditions. As global economic and unemployment conditions improve, consumer spending should increase in response. Increased spending will drive greater demand for basic and specialty chemicals.
Mechanical Seals are categorized based on device type into Compressor Mechanical Seals, Pump Mechanical Seals, Mixer Mechanical Seals, Turbine Mechanical Seals, etc., with Pump Mechanical Seals being the largest classification. It will account for approximately 38% of the market share in 2023, followed by Compressor Mechanical Seals at 30%.
