Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a geophysical method that uses radio waves (usually in the frequency range of 1 to 1000 MHz) to determine the distribution of materials within a medium. GPR goes by many names, such as Ground-Probing Radar, Subsurface Radar, Geo Radar, Impulse Radar, and Surface Penetrating Radar. All these terms refer to the use of broadband electromagnetic waves in pulse form to detect what lies beneath the surface or to identify invisible internal objects or structures. This non-destructive method utilizes electromagnetic radiation in the microwave band of the radio spectrum (UHF/VHF frequencies) and detects the reflected signals from subsurface structures. GPR can be applied to various media, including rock, soil, ice, fresh water, pavement, and structures. Historically, GPR has primarily focused on mapping subsurface structures; recently, GPR has been used for non-destructive testing of non-metallic structures.
The concept of using radio waves to detect subsurface structures is not new. Undoubtedly, the most successful early work in this field was using radio echo sounding to map the thickness of the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps and measure glacier thickness. The use of GPR in non-ice environments began in the early 1970s, with early work focusing on permafrost applications.
The applications of GPR are limited only by imagination and the availability of suitable instruments. Today, GPR is widely used in many different fields, including locating buried utilities, mining site assessment, forensic investigations, archaeological excavations, locating buried landmines and unexploded ordnance, and measuring the thickness and quality of snow and ice for ski slope management and avalanche prediction, among other applications.
