Work lighting, also often called “job lighting,” “site lighting,” or “task lighting. LED work lights are lighting fixtures that utilize Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as their light source, is a lighting device designed for use in poorly lit work environments. These lights are specifically designed for various work environments, such as construction sites, workshops, garages, and outdoor projects. Work lights come in three primary forms: handheld lights, floodlights, and headlights. LED work lights offer several advantages over traditional lighting sources, including energy efficiency, longer lifespan, durability, and brightness. They provide intense illumination, making them suitable for tasks that require ample lighting, even in low-light or dark conditions. LED work lights come in various sizes, shapes, and designs, catering to different needs and preferences in the workplace. From the types of LEDs used, mainly include SMD, COB LED, and DIP. SMD LEDs – Surface Mounted Diode SMD LEDs are used in multiple LED work lights. They are very reliable and can package up to three diodes onto a single SMD chip. This means that a different range of colors can be created from a single chip. They do create more glare, which makes it a better choice for spotlights rather than floodlights. This glare is offset by a powerful diffuser that spreads the LEDs into an even pattern. DIP LEDs – (Dual in-line package) DIP LEDs have been around for a while and are widely used in outdoor applications due to their high impact resistance. This is due to their construction, being surrounded by resin and soldered directly to the circuit board via two pins. The disadvantage, however, is that DIP LEDs are limited in the brightness they can produce. In order to make an effective LED work light composed of DIP LEDs, the device itself would have to be very large and bulky. Still, they're often found on cheap work lights and camping flashlights, providing a dim, flat light. COB LEDs – Chip on Board COB LED is the latest technology in work lights. These LEDs pack more than 9 diodes into a single LED chip, making them more space efficient. This also means they emit more light while using up power, resulting in brighter LED work lights that run more efficiently. From the of brightness, are measured in lumens. Measured in lumens, the brightness portable LED work lights give off is often a factor, with a higher lumen number indicating brighter lighting. Generally, smaller projects will need lighting between 1000 and 2000, whereas larger projects may require a lumen rating of more than 3000 . If replacing standard lighting with something more portable, LED work lights should have a similar lumen rating to those they're replacing. With standard work lights, wattage indicates brightness, but using the same wattage for LED lighting will result in a higher lumen rating , as they require much less wattage to produce the same amount of light. Color temperature is another important factor when choosing a portable LED work light. The color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K), which refers to the light's warmth or coolness. For portable work lights needed for working indoors, a color temperature between 2700K to 3500K is suitable. In contrast, for outdoor work, a color temperature of 5000K to 6500K would be better. For example, the following types of lighting have these associated color temperatures: Cool white: Giving off a “bluish” white light, the color temperature of this lighting ranges between 7000K and 7500K. Direct sunlight: Compared with artificial lighting, sunlight has a color temperature of around 5000K. Natural white: Referred to as “true” white, color temperatures range from 4000K to 4500K. Traditional fluorescent: Older fluorescent lighting is sometimes referred to as a “blue” white, with a color temperature of about 10,000K. Warm white: Also known as “yellow” white, the temperature ranges from 2700K to 3200K.
