Ethylene n Butyl Acrylate Copolymer, or EnBA, Adhesive refers to a thermoplastic adhesive material in which an ethylene and n butyl acrylate random copolymer functions as the principal polymeric binder. EnBA is generally produced by high pressure free radical copolymerization of ethylene with n butyl acrylate. The ethylene rich molecular backbone provides cohesive strength, toughness and thermoplastic solidification, while the randomly incorporated n butyl acrylate units suppress polyethylene crystallinity and modulus and increase polarity, flexibility and molecular mobility. Increasing n butyl acrylate content generally lowers melting temperature and stiffness while improving low temperature flexibility, substrate wetting and compatibility with polar formulation components. These molecular characteristics allow EnBA adhesives to combine controlled melt rheology, good interfacial wetting, thermal stability and adhesion across substrates including paper, polyolefins, polyester, aluminum and other packaging or converting materials. Adhesive performance is governed principally by n butyl acrylate content, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, melt flow characteristics, crystallization behavior, polarity and compatibility with tackifiers, waxes and other formulation components. Commercial EnBA grades used in adhesive formulations span a wide rheological range. ExxonMobil ENBA330033 contains approximately 32.5 wt% n butyl acrylate and has a melt index of approximately 330 g per 10 min at 190°C and 2.16 kg, with a peak melting temperature of approximately 62°C, making it a very high flow resin for hot melt adhesives and sealants. Repsol Ebantix E33150 contains approximately 33% butyl acrylate with an MFI of approximately 150 g per 10 min and is used in hot melt formulations requiring high adhesion, thermal stability and a broad service temperature range. SK Functional Polymer LOTRYL 35BA40 contains approximately 35 wt% butyl acrylate with a melt index of approximately 40 g per 10 min and a melting point near 66°C, providing high polarity, flexibility and fluidity for hot melt adhesive formulations. Dow ELVALOY AC 3427 contains approximately 27% butyl acrylate with a melt index of approximately 4 g per 10 min and a melting point near 94°C, representing a lower flow EnBA grade used in hot melt adhesive production and applications requiring toughness and low temperature flexibility. LUCOBIT Lucofin 2334 TS provides approximately 33% butyl acrylate with an MFI of approximately 40 g per 10 min and is commercially offered for hot melt adhesive applications. These grades demonstrate how EnBA chemistry can be adjusted from relatively high molecular weight, lower flow materials to very high flow adhesive resins while retaining the polarity and thermal characteristics associated with the ethylene acrylate structure. Commercial EnBA adhesive systems commonly combine the copolymer with tackifying resins, waxes, antioxidants and stabilizers. Tackifiers modify surface tack and substrate affinity, waxes regulate melt viscosity and setting behavior, and stabilizers protect the polymer and formulation during repeated exposure to elevated processing temperatures. During application, the molten adhesive flows across and wets the substrate surface, allowing intimate interfacial contact. Cooling subsequently increases viscosity and restores the solid polymer structure, with bond strength developing from the combined effects of interfacial adhesion, polymer cohesion and crystallization. The balance among melt viscosity, open time, setting rate, cohesive strength, flexibility and service temperature can therefore be adjusted through both EnBA molecular architecture and formulation composition. EnBA adhesives are used primarily in hot melt bonding systems for packaging, bookbinding, carpet backing, hygiene products and related industrial converting and assembly processes. Their material characteristics are particularly relevant where the adhesive must retain flexibility at reduced temperatures, tolerate elevated processing temperatures, wet chemically dissimilar substrates and maintain stable adhesion during thermal and mechanical cycling. Commercial grades from ExxonMobil, Repsol, SK Functional Polymer, Dow and LUCOBIT illustrate the current industrial range of EnBA compositions and rheological properties used to meet these requirements.
