Ethylene Butyl Acrylate Copolymer (EBA) is a thermoplastic ethylene acrylate copolymer formed by free radical copolymerization of ethylene with butyl acrylate, with commercial products using predominantly n butyl acrylate as the acrylate comonomer. Its molecular structure consists of a polyethylene dominant carbon backbone containing distributed butyl acrylate units with polar ester groups. Ethylene sequences retain semicrystalline polyolefin character, while incorporation of butyl acrylate disrupts polyethylene chain packing and reduces crystal perfection. Increasing butyl acrylate content generally lowers crystallinity, melting temperature, modulus and hardness, while increasing flexibility, toughness, low temperature ductility, polarity and compatibility with polar materials. Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution provide a second major control variable, allowing EBA grades with comparable acrylate contents to exhibit substantially different melt flow, viscosity and processing behavior. The combined effects of comonomer content, molecular weight and comonomer distribution determine mechanical response, impact modification efficiency, heat sealing behavior, filler acceptance, interfacial adhesion and melt rheology. Commercial grades illustrate the breadth of this structure property range. SK Functional Polymer LOTRYL® 17BA07T contains 17 wt% butyl acrylate, has a melt index of 7 g per 10 min at 190°C and 2.16 kg, a melting point of 107°C and a flexural modulus of 74 MPa; it is used in tie layers, extrusion coatings, compounds, foams and wire and cable formulations. Repsol Ebantix® E20020 contains 20% butyl acrylate and has a melt flow index of 20 g per 10 min, representing a relatively fluid EBA grade with flexibility and adhesion to polar substrates. Westlake EBAC® SP1802 contains 22.5 wt% butyl acrylate, has a melt index of 0.5 g per 10 min, density of 0.927 g per cm³ and melting point of 87°C, and is used in flexible films and PET impact modification. Dow ELVALOY™ AC 3427 contains 27% butyl acrylate, has a melt index of 4 g per 10 min and a melting point of 94°C, with commercial use in polymer modification, hot melt adhesive formulations, asphalt modification and related compounding applications. At the higher acrylate end, SK Functional Polymer LOTRYL® 35BA40T contains 35 wt% butyl acrylate, has a melt index of 40 g per 10 min, a melting point of 89°C and a flexural modulus below 10 MPa, illustrating the strong reduction in stiffness and increase in fluidity achievable at elevated acrylate content. Across commercial EBA grades, butyl acrylate content therefore spans compositions ranging from relatively polyethylene rich materials used where film strength, processability and moderate flexibility remain important to high acrylate materials with markedly lower modulus, greater softness and higher polarity. Melt index can vary independently across this composition range, permitting manufacturers to tailor EBA for film extrusion, extrusion coating, cable compounds, impact modification, adhesive formulations, polymer modification and highly filled systems. The commercial identity of EBA is consequently defined by the interaction of ethylene crystallinity, polar butyl acrylate content and molecular weight architecture, which together establish the material response between conventional polyethylene and highly flexible polar ethylene copolymers.

Supply is controlled by a limited group of producers with high pressure ethylene copolymer assets, including ExxonMobil, Repsol, Dow, Borouge International, SK Functional Polymer, Westlake Corporation, LUCOBIT, INEOS, LyondellBasell and Hanwha Solutions. Hanwha Solutions disclosed 40 kt per year of EBA production capacity at its Ulsan facility, a significant quantity relative to the estimated global demand base. Industry output remains constrained by high pressure reactor availability, butyl acrylate handling, grade conversion schedules, customer qualification and competition for reactor time with other ethylene copolymers. Through 2032, the market is expected to expand primarily through higher physical consumption of specialty flexible ethylene copolymers, with the 2026 to 2032 revenue increase of approximately USD 59.36 million reflecting rising cable material demand, broader use in polymer modification and only moderate net price appreciation.
