Ethylene Acrylic Acid Adhesive refers to thermoplastic adhesive materials in which ethylene acrylic acid copolymer, commonly abbreviated as EAA, provides the principal bonding function. EAA is produced by copolymerizing ethylene with acrylic acid under high pressure free radical conditions, typically in autoclave or tubular reactor systems. The polyethylene backbone provides melt processability, toughness, flexibility and moisture resistance, while pendant carboxylic acid groups introduce polarity and strong interfacial interaction with aluminum, steel, paper, paperboard, metallized films, polyethylene and other polar or surface treated substrates. This molecular combination gives EAA its characteristic function as an adhesive resin, tie layer, sealant layer and adhesion promoter in multilayer structures. High pressure reactor capability, control of acrylic acid incorporation, molecular weight distribution, melt strength and polymer acidity are fundamental manufacturing variables because EAA production involves both severe pressure conditions and chemically aggressive acid comonomer service. Commercial EAA adhesive grades cover a relatively broad molecular and rheological range. Current SK PRIMACOR products illustrate acrylic acid contents from approximately 6.5 wt% in film and extrusion grades to 20.5 wt% in high acid dispersion grades, with melt index values ranging from about 1.0 to 300 g per 10 min at 190°C and 2.16 kg and melting points from approximately 77°C to 103°C. Dow NUCREL 3990 contains 9.5% acrylic acid, has a melt index of 10 g per 10 min, density of 0.940 g per cm³ and melting point of 97°C, while ExxonMobil Exxtra Adhere EAA8308 contains 7.5 wt% acrylic acid with a melt index of 8.3 g per 10 min. Acid content, molecular weight, branching structure and melt index collectively determine polarity, melt strength, drawdown behavior, coating stability, film integrity, seal response and suitability for aqueous dispersion. Higher acid grades provide greater polarity and are particularly relevant where water dispersibility or strong adhesion promotion is required. The principal commercial forms are solid resin pellets or prills, film grade resins, extrusion coating resins and waterborne EAA dispersions or emulsifiable grades. Solid EAA is processed by extrusion coating, coextrusion coating, extrusion lamination, blown film and cast film routes, where the molten copolymer forms a continuous bonding or sealing layer between substrates. PRIMACOR 3002, for example, is processed at reported melt temperatures of 260°C to 290°C and is used as an adhesive or sealant layer in extrusion coating and lamination. High acid grades such as PRIMACOR 5980i, with 20.5% acrylic acid and a melt index of 300 g per 10 min, are suitable for dispersion systems, while Solstice A C 5120 contains 15% acrylic acid and an acid number of 120, enabling emulsification or dispersion in water for adhesive formulations. These forms place EAA across both thermoplastic conversion and waterborne adhesive systems. Packaging accounts for the principal industrial use of EAA adhesive technology, particularly flexible laminates, liquid packaging board, foil laminates, metallized film structures, food packaging, cosmetic packaging and laminated tubes. The same adhesion chemistry is also used in cable shielding, composite films, industrial laminates, hot melt adhesive formulations and specialty coatings. In these structures, EAA combines adhesion to polar surfaces with polyethylene compatibility, heat sealability, hot tack, oil and grease resistance and mechanical toughness. Extrusion performance depends materially on melt tension, drawdown stability and control of neck in, while final bond performance reflects acid content, substrate surface chemistry, thermal history and interfacial contact. The upstream chain is centered on ethylene and acrylic acid, followed by high pressure copolymerization, polymer finishing and pelletization, with selected high acid grades undergoing further dispersion or emulsification. The resulting material occupies a distinct functional position between conventional polyethylene sealants, chemically modified tie layer resins and aqueous adhesion promoters in multilayer packaging and industrial bonding systems.

Ethylene and acrylic acid are the principal upstream feedstocks, while acid content, molecular weight, melt index and product form determine grade positioning and selling price. Industry growth is expected to remain moderate as mature packaging markets expand gradually, while Asia contributes incremental demand from flexible packaging, extrusion lamination and specialty polymer applications. New EAA capacity in China may improve regional supply availability over the forecast period and place gradual pressure on import dependence and average selling prices. Volume growth is therefore expected to exceed revenue growth modestly through 2032.
