Cork–Rubber Materials and Gaskets refer to a family of engineered sealing products in which granulated natural cork is dispersed within a continuous elastomer matrix to form compressible composite sheets, rolls, or molded shapes, and the gaskets die-cut or formed from these composites for use in bolted or clamped joints. In this system the cork phase provides low density, high compressibility and micro-conformability to mating surfaces, while the rubber phase (typically based on NBR, SBR, CR or other synthetic elastomers) provides cohesive strength, elasticity, resistance to oils, fuels and process media, and thermal stability over the target service range. Cork–rubber materials are manufactured by selecting and grading cork granule size and density, compounding these granules with the chosen elastomer, fillers and curatives, then calendaring, pressing or molding the compound into sheets or rolls with controlled thickness, density, hardness, compression set and recovery; Cork–Rubber Gaskets are the finished sealing elements obtained by die-cutting, water-jet cutting or molding these materials into geometries that match transformer covers, flanges, gear housings, sumps, compressor heads and other sealing interfaces. As a category, Cork–Rubber Materials and Gaskets are distinguished from pure cork and resin-bonded cork by the presence of a true rubber matrix, and are used where a combination of conformability, vibration and noise damping, medium resistance and bolt load retention is required in applications such as power transmission and distribution equipment, automotive and engine systems, mechanical and process equipment, and gas or fluid handling assemblies.
