Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica, is an amorphous, synthetic silica produced by vapor phase hydrolysis of chlorosilanes in a hydrogen oxygen flame. In the flame process, primary particles are fused into branched, three-dimensional secondary particles or aggregates. In the collection system, aggregates are mechanically entangled to form agglomerates (Figure 1.). The surface of untreated fumed silica has hydroxyl groups which makes the surface hydrophilic. Fumed silica can be made hydrophobic by chemically modifying the surface with hydroxyl groups. The degree of hydrophobicity is a function of the chemistry of the treating agent (Figure 2.). The appearance of fumed silica is a white, low bulk density powder. The primary particle size is between 7-40nm, the aggregate particle size is about 200-500nm, the specific surface area is 100-400 m²/g, the purity is high, the SiO2 content is not less than 99.8% (Figure 3.).
The fumed silica powder has strong stability, dispersion, reinforcing, thickening and thixotropy, and is suitable for specific applications, such as ultra-fine inorganic new materials, composite materials, antibacterial materials and so on. It is used as a reinforcing, thickening, abrasive, thixotropic, suspending or anticaking agent in a wide variety of products for the automotive, construction, microelectronics, batteries and consumer products industries. These products include adhesives, sealants, cosmetics, batteries, inks, toners, silicone elastomers, coatings, polishing slurries and pharmaceuticals.
Asia Pacific stands as the largest and fastest-growing region, with revenues increasing from $472.76 million in 2019 to a projected $898.45 million by 2030. The region’s strong industrial base, particularly in the automotive, electronics, and construction sectors, continues to drive the consumption of fumed silica. The market in Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a robust CAGR of 6.21% from 2024 to 2030, reflecting increasing demand from industries reliant on high-performance materials like fumed silica.
North America, while not the largest market, shows stable growth with a CAGR of 5.76% (2024-2030), driven by advancements in technologies related to paints, coatings, and high-end silicone rubber. Europe’s market, recovering from a slight dip, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.36%, reaching $589.90 million by 2030. Both regions benefit from well-established industries, but slower growth in manufacturing compared to Asia Pacific contributes to more moderate expansion rates.
Though smaller in scale, both Latin America and the Middle East & Africa (MEA) show promising growth. Latin America is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.12%, with key demand drivers being the adhesives, coatings, and industrial manufacturing sectors. MEA, although representing the smallest market, has notable growth potential with a CAGR of 4.79%, as industrialization and infrastructure projects increase the demand for high-performance materials like fumed silica.
The market for fumed silica is expected to see an overall increase in sales volume from 282,585 tons in 2023 to 409,759 tons by 2030, translating into significant revenue growth from USD 1.85 billion to USD 2.37 billion over the same period.
Revenue growth outpaces volume growth, indicating increasing product value, driven by higher demand for specialized applications such as advanced coatings, high-performance silicone rubbers, and composite materials. This trend reflects the premium pricing for high-grade fumed silica with specific properties like higher BET surface areas (210-300 m²/g).
