Field Joint Coating (FJC) is the field-applied external corrosion protection coating system used to protect the bare steel and adjacent cutback areas at pipe girth welds after pipe joints, bends, or fittings are welded together, so that the welded connection regains corrosion protection continuity with the factory-applied mainline coating on buried or submerged steel pipelines. In standards practice, FJC covers the qualification, application, and testing of the corrosion-protection coating applied to steel surfaces left bare after welding, and it is primarily defined for oil and gas pipeline transportation service. Typical FJC systems are selected to match the mainline coating and service conditions, and may include heat-shrink systems, liquid-applied coatings, fusion-bonded epoxy based field systems, or cold-applied tape or visco-elastic systems.
FJC refers to the corrosion-protection coating function at the welded field joint itself, not the broader package of external protection measures that may also be installed at the same location. Additional mechanical protection, thermal insulation, and concrete weight-coat joint infill can be part of the overall pipeline joint protection design, but they are treated separately from the core FJC corrosion-coating scope in the ISO field-joint coating standard framework.
