The word chelate is derived from the Greek word chelé, which refers to a lobster's claw. Hence, chelate refers to the pincer-like way in which a metal nutrient ion is encircled by the larger organic molecule (the claw), usually called a ligand or chelator. Chelated micro-nutrients are protected from oxidation, precipitation, and immobilization in certain conditions because the organic molecule (the ligand) can combine and form a ring encircling the micro-nutrient. The pincer-like way the micro-nutrient is bonded to the ligand changes the micro-nutrient's surface property and favors the uptake efficiency of foliarly applied micro-nutrients.
Chelate fertilizer are fertilizers using chelated metal ions to provide micro-nutrients for plants. It contains metal ions such as iron, copper, zinc, etc. Without those micro-nutrients, plants will grow slower ad weaker. Chelate fertilizer need to be dissolved into water then applied to the plants.
The mostly used chelate fertilizer is iron chelate fertilizer. Iron chelate fertilize took 48% of the market by production. Iron is the most important micro-nutrient for plants because chlorophyll requires iron ion to be synthesis. However, the market share of combine mixture and other chelate fertilizer are increasing for farmers have realized the importance of micro-nutrients.Chelate fertilizer are used for crops the most. 88% of the chelate fertilizer are used for crops by production. Farmers use chelate fertilizers to replenish micro-nutrients for their crops in order to improve the yield.
